Embarking on the journey of moving abroad for studies is a thrilling and transformative experience. For a then 25-year-old female, this chapter marked not only the pursuit of academic excellence but also an exploration of a new culture, language, and way of life. In this guide, we’ll delve into essential aspects of making the move to Poland, offering insights, tips, and practical advice.
- Research Your Destination:
- Before you set foot in Poland, familiarize yourself with the country’s culture, customs, and lifestyle. Learn about local traditions, the education system, and any specific regulations or norms that may affect your daily life. This knowledge will help you integrate seamlessly into your new environment. Mostly all stores are closed on Sunday!
- Language Preparation:
- While many people in Poland speak English mostly in major cities, especially in academic settings, having a basic understanding of the Polish language can enhance your experience. Consider taking language classes or using language-learning apps to grasp common phrases and expressions that will make daily interactions smoother. Trust me knowing a few basic words will take you a long way some people may not want to cooperate with you if you only speak English. Been there done that!
- Financial Planning:
- Create a comprehensive budget that includes tuition fees, accommodation, living expenses, and unforeseen costs. Research local banking options and set up a bank account upon arrival. Familiarize yourself with currency exchange rates and explore available scholarships or financial aid options. Having a debit or credit card that doesn’t charge an international fee is a plus if you’re unable to open an bank account over there.
- Accommodation Arrangements:
- Secure your accommodation well in advance. Whether you opt for university dormitories, private apartments, or shared housing, ensure that the place meets your preferences in terms of location, amenities, and budget. Reach out to local student communities or forums for insights and recommendations. Facebook marketplace or olx were the two places I searched for my room.
- Healthcare and Insurance:
- Understand the healthcare system in Poland and ensure you have comprehensive health insurance coverage. Familiarize yourself with the local medical facilities and emergency services. Keep a copy of your insurance documents, medical records, and any necessary prescriptions. I unfortunately got hurt during my time there and having health insurance was a huge plus the only downside is you have to pay out of pocket and then the insurance company reimburses you. Which thankful my costs were not that bad, but that is something I was unaware. So, have some spare cash for emergencies you never know what might happen. I used swisscare.
- Cultural Sensitivity:
- Embrace cultural diversity and be open to new experiences. Polish society is rich in history and traditions, and building cultural awareness will help you connect with locals and make the most of your time abroad. Attend local events, festivals, and gatherings to immerse yourself in the vibrant culture.
- Networking and Socializing:
- Join student clubs, attend orientation events, and participate in extracurricular activities to meet fellow students and build a social network. Making friends with both locals and fellow international students can enrich your experience and provide a support system during your time abroad.I’ve met long lasting friends who I am eternally grateful for!
- Social Integration:
- Building a social support system is crucial for a positive experience abroad. Attend orientation events, join clubs or societies, and connect with fellow international and local students. This will not only enhance your experience but also provide a network of support.
- Explore and Enjoy:
- Studying abroad isn’t just about academics; it’s also an opportunity for personal growth and exploration. Take time to explore Poland’s historical sites, cultural events, and natural landscapes. Embrace the diversity around you and make the most of your time abroad. There’s a lot of free tours in major cities and travel can be done through bus, train, car, or plane! I liked taking tours with Walkative!
- Stay Connected:
- Keep in touch with family and friends back home. Utilize technology to maintain connections, share your experiences, and seek support when needed. Balancing your new life with a sense of continuity from your home country can contribute to a smoother transition.
I highly recommend a good pair of walking shoes you’ll find yourself walking everywhere I enjoyed these shoes
Moving abroad to Poland was an incredible adventure filled with opportunities for personal and academic growth. By thorough planning, cultural sensitivity, and a positive mindset, you can make the most of this experience. Embrace the challenges, celebrate the victories, and relish the journey as you embark on this exciting chapter of your life. Best of luck!
